Joe Biden returning to Michigan with UAW backing

LANSING — President Joe Biden plans to return to Michigan on Thursday – one week after securing a key endorsement from the United Auto Workers union.
The White House confirmed the planned trip on Tuesday afternoon, saying only that Biden will "participate in a political event" in Michigan.
The president's re-election campaign later told Bridge Michigan that Biden will meet with UAW members during the visit.

The Detroit-based union endorsed Biden for re-election last Thursday, urging members to support the Democratic incumbent over former President Donald Trump, a Republican who has aggressively courted blue collar voters in his own bid to return to the White House.
Biden, who made history by joining striking auto workers on the picket line last September, "earned it," UAW President Shawn Fain said last week.
The UAW ended its nearly seven-week labor strike in late October after securing new employment agreements with Detroit automakers that will raise worker pay but mean slimmer profit margins for the Big Three.
At the time, Biden celebrated a “hard-fought agreement” that followed weeks of what he called “good faith” negotiations.
Trump has argued Biden’s support for electric vehicles will ultimately hurt auto workers. He blasted Fain for the UAW endorsement last week, urging union members to “get rid of this dope.”
Biden's Michigan trip will come less than a month before the state's Feb. 27 presidential primary. While two other Democrats will appear on the ballot, Biden is not expected to face significant opposition in the contest.
