Several Michigan campsites will be closed for renovations in '25. See list

  • Several state park’s day-use and campground sites will be closed for the 2025 camping season 
  • Campground sites at Interlochen and Algonac state parks are among many that will be closed for repair and restoration projects 
  • Other sites will be closed during the spring but are expected to reopen for the remainder of the 2025 season

Early birds looking to book their favorite state campground for the 2025 season may notice that some popular locations are temporarily unavailable. 

Over a dozen day-use areas and campsites will be closed for all or part of the 2025 season, according to the Department of Natural Resources. Michiganders can reserve camping sites up to six months in advance.

Some sites will be closed for restoration projects under Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan, which includes $250 million in federal relief to enhance infrastructure at state parks.

Here are a few popular sites that will be closed for repairs or restoration projects in the upcoming year. A full list can be found here

  • Algonac State Park's Riverfront Modern Campground will be closed until March 22 and the Wagon Wheel Modern Campground will be closed until May 15. 
  • Allegan State Game Area Trowbridge Dam boat launch will be closed until 2027. Hunting and fishing access along the Kalamazoo River will be limited
  • Belle Isle Park’s Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and the casino will be closed for major renovations through early 2025. 
  • Bewabic State Park B and C loops in the modern campground will be closed for the entire season while enhancements like a new toilet and shower building are being made. 
  • Brighton Recreation Area Bishop Lake modern campground is closed through mid-May. 
  • Brimley State Park's modern campground will close until May 19 and the day-use area until June 15 for upgrades to water lines and the stormwater system. 
  • Clear Lake State Park modern campground and lodge will be closed for renovations through June 16. 
  • Interlochen State Park's modern campground will be closed until May 15 for renovations to the water and sewer system. The beach house toilet building will remain closed until mid-April.  
  • The majority of Ludington State Park will be closed through July 1 for various enhancements including a larger parking lot and warming shelters. 
  • Otsego Lake State Park campground will open May 1 but the campground will close starting in early August for a construction project to improve the electrical and septic systems and convert 44 campsites to full-hookup. 
  • Pontiac Lake Recreation Area's modern campground and lodging facilities will be closed through April for enhancements to the sanitation station entrance. 
  • Rifle River Recreation Area’s Grousehaven modern campground will be closed through the spring for improvements to the electric, water and lift station. 
  • Tawas Point State Park’s modern campground in Iosco county will be closed until April 30 for park enhancements.
