Thank you so much for voting on our reading selection for Bridge’s inaugural virtual book club. We’re ready to launch!

The Bridge book club pick for May is “The World According to Fannie Davis” by Bridgett M. Davis.

Here’s how this will work: Each month, we’ll pick a book with a connection to Michigan. It might be written by an author from Michigan, be set in our state, or focus on a figure from Michigan.

The book review will last about one month. We’ll give everyone a week to acquire the book, as we know that coronavirus has presented challenges to getting new items. We’ll then go through the book a few chapters at a time, week by week, with a discussion post in a closed Facebook group every Friday. The discussion post will contain thoughts and discussion questions from Bridge, but we’ll have comments turned on so you can share your thoughts, too.

At the conclusion of the month, we’ll hold an hourlong Zoom call, moderated by newsletter and copy editor Monica Williams and Membership Director Amber DeLind, to discuss the book live.

How you can acquire the book

For Bridge Club members, we will provide an e-version of the selected book as a membership benefit. If you’re not already a member, join today for as little as $1 and support our nonprofit newsroom. Members will be sent a link to redeem their free book.

For those who are not Bridge Club members, would like to borrow the book, or would prefer a physical copy, you have other options. You can order “The World According to Fannie Davis” directly from the publisher, or download it from a Michigan library system to an e-reader or smartphone via Overdrive or Libby. The book may also be available for order from local bookstores, some of whom are offering curbside pickup. Call your local bookstore to inquire.

How to take part in the online discussion

To participate throughout the month in our weekly discussions, please join our closed Facebook group by clicking here. Bridge’s social media team will approve your membership in this closed group.

Every week, we will post some discussion questions about a section of chapters and group members will be invited to interact with our team and with one another.

Participation in these weekly discussions is not required to participate in the Zoom discussion.

How to join the live Zoom discussion

Our hour-long Zoom discussion will take place Friday, June 12 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. To be invited to participate in this discussion, please complete this form and we’ll send you the link via email.

To learn more about how to join a Zoom meeting, please watch this short video below. Zoom is free to use, and you can use the video call function on your computer, tablet, or phone, or you can call into the meeting using the conference line function.
